Ahrefs Starter Plan: What $29 a Month Opens, and Its Limits
Published Jul 24, 2026Prices re-read Sep 22, 2026
The Ahrefs Starter plan costs $29 a month and gives one user 200 credits a month plus access to Keywords Explorer and Rank Tracker, the two tools Ahrefs Free leaves out. It is the cheapest way to research keywords and competitors with Ahrefs data, and it is deliberately narrow: no extra users, no extra credits, no add-ons, monthly billing only.
Everything here comes from Ahrefs' pricing page and its own announcement of the plan, both read on 22 September 2026. Ahrefs has no affiliate programme, so this page earns nothing whichever plan you choose.
What Starter includes
Starter is a credit-based plan like Lite, with 200 credits a month that you spend on reports and fresh data in most of Ahrefs' core tools. According to Ahrefs' announcement, the plan includes these tools:
- SEO Dashboard
- Site Explorer
- Keywords Explorer (not in Ahrefs Free)
- Site Audit
- Rank Tracker (not in Ahrefs Free)
- The Ahrefs SEO Toolbar
- Web Analytics and Social Media Manager
Site Audit and Rank Tracker don't use credits, because they carry their own limits. Ahrefs describes the plan as for people "just starting out" and "designed for light usage", which is a fair warning: 200 credits is a small allowance if you research every day.
The four rules that make Starter narrow
Starter's price comes with four conditions, all stated in Ahrefs' terms for the plan. They matter more than the feature list:
- You cannot buy additional users, credits or any other add-ons.
- You cannot downgrade to Starter from Lite or any higher plan.
- The plan can only be renewed monthly — there is no annual version.
- Ahrefs says features and limits "may be changed without prior notice".
The second rule is the one that catches people. If you start on Lite to see what Ahrefs can do and then decide it is too much, you cannot step down to Starter; you would have to cancel instead. If you are unsure, start on Starter and move up.
Starter, Free and Lite compared
Starter sits between a free account and a $129 plan, and the right choice depends on whether you need to look beyond your own website. Ahrefs Free is enough for your own site; Starter adds research on anyone's; Lite adds capacity.
What each of Ahrefs' cheapest options adds
- $0Ahrefs FreeYour own verified sites: Site Explorer and Site Audit.
- $29StarterAdds Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker and any site — on 200 credits a month.
- $129LiteAdds capacity: 1,000 credits per user a month and up to two extra users.
| What you get | Ahrefs Free | Starter | Lite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | $29 a month | $129 a month |
| Billing | None | Monthly only | Monthly; annual "saves up to 17%" |
| Users | 1 | 1, no extras | 1, plus up to 2 at $40 each |
| Research allowance | 1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once | 200 credits a month | 1,000 credits per user a month |
| Keywords Explorer | No | Yes | Yes |
| Rank Tracker | No | Yes | Yes, 750 keywords updated weekly |
| Site Audit | 5,000 crawl credits a month per project | Yes | 100,000 crawl credits a month |
| Works on sites you don't own | No — verified sites only | Yes | Yes |
Ahrefs publishes Starter's exact tracked-keyword and crawl limits in an image table on its announcement rather than as text on the pricing page, and we don't quote figures we could not read, so those cells say only "Yes".
Making 200 credits last
Ahrefs doesn't print a per-report credit price on its pricing page — it links to a help article on which actions consume credits — so we can't tell you how many reports 200 credits buys. What we can say is how to spend fewer of them.
- Use free sources for your own site. Your own clicks and positions come free from Google Search Console, and your own backlinks and audit from Ahrefs Free, so keep Starter's credits for competitors and keyword ideas.
- Plan research in batches. Decide the ten keywords or three competitors you need this week, research them in one sitting, and write down what you find rather than reopening the same reports.
- Let Rank Tracker do the watching. Rank Tracker doesn't use credits, so checking positions there is cheaper than re-running reports to see whether a page has moved.
If you still run out every month, that is the signal Starter was built to send: you have outgrown light usage, and Lite's 1,000 credits a month — or a different tool — is the next question.
Who Starter suits
Starter fits one person with one site who needs keyword ideas and a look at competitors a few times a week. A blogger choosing topics, a shop owner checking what rivals rank for, or a freelancer scoping a single client are the clearest cases.
It does not fit an agency, a team or anyone who tracks many sites, because it cannot grow: when you outgrow it, the next step is Lite at $129, a jump of $100 a month. If that jump is the problem, the cheaper alternatives in our Ahrefs alternatives guide are worth a look before you upgrade.
Starter against the other cheap plans
At $29 a month billed monthly, Starter is the cheapest paid entry to any suite on our Semrush alternatives list. Mangools Basic costs $30.50 billed monthly, but $18.85 a month if you pay for a year, which Starter doesn't allow.
The trade-offs differ. Mangools Basic gives 100 keyword lookups a day and 200 tracked keywords updated weekly, with a 48-hour refund window. SpyFu's Basic costs $39 a month and leans towards competitors' ads. Moz sells a Starter plan at $49 a month for a single website. Semrush has no plan under $139, although its free account allows 10 Analytics requests a day. None is objectively best; the right one is whichever database you trust after trying a few keywords you already know well.
When Ahrefs Free is enough
If you only want to see your own site through Ahrefs' eyes, Ahrefs Free may be all you need. It is free permanently, needs no card, and covers Site Explorer and Site Audit for websites you verify, with 5,000 crawl credits a month per project.
What it lacks is exactly what Starter adds: Keywords Explorer and Rank Tracker, and any view of sites you don't own. Pair Ahrefs Free with Google Search Console, which is also free, and a single-site owner can go a long way before paying anyone.
Moving up from Starter
When Starter stops being enough, the next Ahrefs rung is Lite at $129 a month, and it changes three things at once: credits rise to 1,000 per user a month, you can add up to two more people at $40 each, and annual billing becomes possible.
Because you cannot come back down to Starter from Lite, make the move only when the limit bites every month, not once. If what you are running out of is rank tracking rather than research, a dedicated tracker may be the cheaper next step — our SE Ranking review covers one that tracks 2,000 keywords daily for the same $129.
Is the $29 plan new?
No. Ahrefs announced the Starter plan in a post dated 2 September 2024, so it is roughly two years old, even though some 2026 articles describe it as a recent launch. The price we read on 22 September 2026 is the same $29 the announcement gives.
