Ahrefs Alternatives (2026): Free and Paid, by the Drawer You Use

Published Jul 5, 2026Prices re-read Sep 22, 2026

This page has partner links, marked sponsored: a vendor may pay us if you subscribe through one. It never buys a place in a list — how we get paid.

The best Ahrefs alternative depends on which part of Ahrefs you would miss. For your own site's data, the free pairing of Google Search Console and Ahrefs Free is hard to beat; for cheaper keyword research, Mangools; for daily rank tracking, SE Ranking or Semrush; for competitors' ads, SpyFu.

Ahrefs itself starts at $29 a month for Starter and $129 for Lite, with rankings updated weekly and research metered by credits on Lite — the pricing we read on ahrefs.com on 22 September 2026. Those three facts are the usual reasons people look elsewhere, so each alternative below is matched to one of them.

Start with the drawer you use

An SEO suite is several tools in one box, and an alternative only has to replace the ones you open. Before comparing prices, list what you did in Ahrefs last month. Ahrefs' tools fall into four drawers:

  • Your own site — its backlinks, its audit, its positions.
  • Keyword research — ideas, volumes, difficulty.
  • Rank tracking — where your pages sit, and how often you need to know.
  • Competitor research — their links, their pages, their ads.

If your list has only the first drawer, you may not need to pay anyone. If it has all four, you are shopping for a full suite, and the comparison is Ahrefs against Semrush, which we cover in Ahrefs vs Semrush.

Free Ahrefs alternatives for your own site

The free alternative to Ahrefs for your own site is Ahrefs Free itself, paired with Google Search Console. Ahrefs Free is permanent, needs no card, and gives Site Explorer and Site Audit data for sites you verify; Search Console, which Google describes as "a free service", shows your real clicks, impressions and average positions.

Between them they cover the own-site drawer: backlinks and audit from Ahrefs Free, real search performance from Search Console. What they cannot do is research keywords you don't rank for or look at competitors. Neither pays us anything, and for a single site they are the right place to start.

Semrush's free account is another option, but a narrower one: 10 Analytics requests a day, one project and 10 tracked keywords, according to its pricing page. Moz's free community account gives limited use of MozBar, Keyword Explorer and Link Explorer.

Cheaper keyword research: Mangools

For keyword research on a small budget, Mangools is the most direct Ahrefs alternative. Its Basic plan costs $30.50 a month, or $18.85 a month billed annually ($226.20 a year), for 100 keyword lookups a day, 200 tracked keywords and 100,000 backlink rows a month.

Against Ahrefs Starter at $29 a month, Mangools Basic is $1.50 more billed monthly but $10.15 a month less billed annually — an option Starter doesn't have, since Ahrefs renews Starter monthly only. Mangools' Basic plan takes no extra seats and updates rankings weekly; its Agency plan, at $70.50 a month, updates daily. Try Mangools — a partner link; Mangools pays us if you subscribe, and offers a full refund within 48 hours of payment.

Daily rank tracking: SE Ranking and Semrush

If Ahrefs' weekly rank updates are the problem, both SE Ranking and Semrush update tracked keywords daily on every plan. SE Ranking's Core plan costs $129 a month — the same as Ahrefs Lite — and tracks 2,000 keywords daily against Lite's 750 weekly.

Semrush's SEO plan costs $139 a month and tracks 500 keywords daily, with a seven-day trial. SE Ranking offers 14 days with no card. For a head-to-head of the two daily trackers, see SE Ranking vs Semrush. Start SE Ranking's free trial — a partner link that pays us if you later subscribe. Our Semrush link pays nothing yet, because this site does not meet Semrush's traffic threshold for partners.

Competitors' ads and history: SpyFu

For research into competitors' paid search as well as their organic rankings, SpyFu is the alternative built for it. Basic costs $39 a month, with 10,000-row search results and 5,000 weekly tracked keyword rankings.

Its Pro + AI plan costs $59 for the first month and $119 a month after that, which is the figure to budget for. SpyFu offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. We have not verified its affiliate programme, so it is named without a link.

Read the "entry price" column with the limits in mind. Ahrefs Starter and Mangools Basic are single-user plans with small allowances; SE Ranking Core and Semrush SEO are full plans for one person. A cheap plan that runs out mid-month costs more than a dearer one that doesn't.

Check these drawers before you cancel

If you are on Ahrefs Standard or above, list the extras you use before leaving, because they are the easiest to forget. Ahrefs puts Content Explorer, Portfolios, Batch Analysis and keyword clusters on Standard ($249 a month), and the Looker Studio integration on Advanced ($449).

For each one you use, confirm the alternative has an equivalent during its trial — not from its feature page. Also export what you want to keep: rank history and saved reports don't follow you to another vendor, although SE Ranking says it can import ranking history from other tools. Ahrefs says a cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period and that it "does not issue refunds in general", so you keep access until then but get no money back.

Mixing a free drawer with a paid one

The biggest savings on this page come from mixing rather than replacing. A single paid tool for the drawer you use daily, plus the free options for everything else, often covers what an Ahrefs plan did.

Three pairings follow directly from the prices above: Mangools Basic for keyword ideas plus Search Console for your own positions; SE Ranking Core for daily tracking plus Ahrefs Free for your own backlinks; or Ahrefs Starter for research plus Search Console for real clicks. Each costs no more a month than Ahrefs Lite's $129, and each leaves you one login to learn instead of a whole suite.

Is any alternative "better" than Ahrefs?

No single tool is better than Ahrefs at everything, and we don't rank any of them on data accuracy, which none of these vendors publishes in a form we can check. What we can say is that for each drawer, at least one alternative costs less or updates more often.

The decision is a trade: cheaper keyword research with Mangools, daily tracking with SE Ranking, competitors' ads with SpyFu, or the whole box with Semrush. For the full list priced against Semrush's plans instead, see our comparison of Semrush alternatives; for Semrush's own price ladder, the next guide is the Semrush pricing breakdown.
