Ahrefs vs Semrush (2026): Which Drawers Each One Opens, and When

Published Jul 14, 2026Prices re-read Sep 22, 2026

Ahrefs or Semrush comes down to one question: do you mostly research, or mostly track? Ahrefs opens its research tools at a lower price and updates tracked rankings weekly; Semrush costs a little more to start but tracks rankings daily and charges less for extra people.

At the entry level the two are $10 apart — Ahrefs Lite at $129 a month and Semrush's SEO plan at $139, both billed monthly and read on the vendors' pages on 22 September 2026. Everything else on this page is about what those two prices actually open.

The entry plans, side by side

Ahrefs Lite and Semrush SEO are each company's first full plan, and on paper they look similar: one user, five projects or websites, a few hundred tracked keywords. Read the limits closely and they are built for different jobs.

Entry plans compared, as published on each vendor's pricing page, 22 September 2026

Two lines in that table decide most choices. Ahrefs tracks more keywords at entry (750 against 500) but refreshes them once a week; Semrush tracks fewer but refreshes them every day. And Ahrefs meters research with credits on Lite, while Semrush's pricing page states no credit cap for the SEO plan.

Which drawer opens at which price

The cheapest way into each tool differs between the two suites, and that matters more than the headline price. Ahrefs opens keyword research and rank tracking at its $29 Starter plan; Semrush opens them at its $139 SEO plan.

  • Keyword research$29$139
  • Rank tracking$29$139
  • Site audit, own site$0$139
  • AI prompt tracking$129$199
  • Historical data$129$299
  • API access$129$549
Drawn from the list above. Amber is Ahrefs' cheapest plan with that drawer, slate is Semrush's; $0 is Ahrefs Free, for sites you verify.
  • Keyword research: Ahrefs from $29 (Starter includes Keywords Explorer); Semrush from $139.
  • Rank tracking: Ahrefs from $29 (Starter includes Rank Tracker, updated weekly); Semrush from $139, updated daily.
  • Site audit on your own site: Ahrefs from $0 (Ahrefs Free, after verifying the site); Semrush from $139.
  • AI prompt tracking: Ahrefs from $129 (Lite, 5 prompts); Semrush from $199 (Starter, 50 prompts daily).
  • Historical data: Ahrefs from $129 (Lite, 6 months); Semrush's "Historical SEO data" from $299 (Pro+).
  • API access: Ahrefs lists "API and MCP access" from Lite, $129; Semrush's "API data integration" from Advanced, $549.

That list is why neither tool is simply cheaper. If you need API data, Ahrefs opens it $420 a month lower down the ladder. If you need 50 AI prompts tracked every day, Semrush's Starter does it for $199, while Ahrefs lists 20 tracked AI prompts on its $449 Advanced plan and sells bigger prompt packages separately.

Daily or weekly: the tracking difference

Semrush updates tracked keywords daily on every plan; Ahrefs updates them weekly on every plan, Enterprise included. For anyone whose main job is watching rankings move, that single difference outweighs most feature lists.

Weekly data is enough if you report once a week or once a month, and Ahrefs gives you more keywords at each price. Daily data matters during a site migration, a launch or a Google update, when you want to know on Tuesday what changed on Monday. Neither vendor publishes an accuracy figure for its rankings, and we have not measured one, so we make no claim that either is more accurate.

Credits, seats and the real bill

Ahrefs' constraint on Lite is credits: 1,000 per user a month, with unlimited credits from Standard ($249) up. Semrush's constraint is seats: every extra person starts at $45 a month, and the SEO plan's 500 keywords are shared by everyone on the account.

For three people on the entry plan, Ahrefs Lite costs $129 + 2 × $40 = $209 a month. Semrush's SEO plan costs at least $139 + 2 × $45 = $229 a month. A fourth person cannot join Ahrefs Lite at all (it allows two extra users), so a team of four is on Ahrefs Standard at $429 a month, or Semrush SEO at $274 a month or more. Our Ahrefs pricing breakdown and Semrush pricing breakdown show the full seat ladders.

Trials, free plans and refunds

Semrush lets you try before paying; Ahrefs does not. Semrush's seven-day trial covers the SEO, Starter and Pro+ plans and checks your card with a small refunded charge; Ahrefs offers no trial and says it "never runs discounts".

Ahrefs' free offer is stronger for your own site, though. Ahrefs Free gives permanent, card-free access to Site Explorer and Site Audit for sites you verify, while Semrush's free account caps you at 10 Analytics requests a day. On refunds, Ahrefs says it "does not issue refunds in general"; Semrush points to a refund policy it does not summarise on the pricing page.

Who should pick which

Pick Ahrefs if your week is research: backlinks, competitors' pages, keyword ideas, and you are happy with weekly rank updates. Pick Semrush if your week is tracking and reporting: daily rankings, a site audit, AI visibility for clients, and a team that grows by one person at a time.

Pick neither if the job is small. A single site that needs keyword ideas and weekly positions can live on Ahrefs Starter at $29 or Mangools Basic, and a site owner who only checks their own performance can start with Google Search Console, which is free. Every cheaper route is priced in our Semrush alternatives, ranked by what they open.

A two-week test before you commit

You can compare the two properly for little money. Start Semrush's seven-day trial on the SEO plan, and in the same week open a free Ahrefs account and verify your own site.

Look up the same ten keywords and your own domain in both, and compare each with the clicks Search Console shows you. If Ahrefs' research views are the ones you keep returning to, a single month of Starter at $29 settles whether its keyword tools earn a place. By the end of the second week you will know which suite matches your own data — which is the only accuracy test that matters for your site.

Ownership, and what might change

Both companies changed in the last two years, and a comparison dated today may not hold next year. Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush on 28 April 2026, per Adobe's announcement, and Semrush's plans now carry AI search in their names.

Ahrefs added its $29 Starter plan in September 2024 and its pricing page now lists tracked AI prompts on every tier, plus a separate Brand Radar AI product from $199 a month. Neither company has told us what comes next, so check both pricing pages before you commit to a year. For the AI side of Semrush's line-up specifically, see Semrush One, explained.
